Why have we launched Unconstrained Labs?
We are optimistic that new scientific discoveries and technologies can continue to address humanity's greatest challenges. However, we are concerned that innovation is being constrained: good ideas are left underexplored, and novel hypotheses are tested too slowly.
Our vision is for world-class talent to test and develop truly novel ideas quickly and without distraction. Our ultimate mission is to deliver leaps in scientific understanding and develop new technologies that meaningfully address global problems.
How does Unconstrained Labs work?
We will:
- Systematically develop and explore novel ideas to a globally important problem, and prioritise ideas with the greatest potential impact, irrespective of likelihood or popularity
- Recruit truly interdisciplinary teams who are able to test solutions rapidly. They will work iteratively and collaboratively (more like a startup than a university). Unconstrained Labs will remove administrative and bureaucratic burdens, enabling team members to focus fully on solving one problem at a time.
How can you get involved?
Initially, we're looking for smart, technical people with broad knowledge bases to take part in the first step: Ideation. The set up is similar to a sandpit and has two stages:
- Solo ideation (60-90 minutes): Read a 15 page problem statement (digital) and share ideas and questions as you read.
- Optional group ideation (~2 hours): Gather in person or virtually to identify themes, refine ideas, and prioritise.
There will be more opportunities, including paid research positions as Unconstrained Labs evolves - please indicate via the form below if this would also be of interest to you.
